Bensheim (German pronunciation: [ˈbɛnsˌhaɪ̯m] ⓘ) is a town in the Bergstraße district in southern Hessen, Germany. Bensheim lies on the Bergstraße and at the edge of the Odenwald mountains while at the same time having an open view over the Rhine plain.

Located approximately thirty miles from Frankfurt, Bensheim displaced persons (DP) camp was part of the Frankfurt district of the American zone of occupation in Germany. Before its conversion into a Jewish DP camp in August 1946, Bensheim had been used as a refugee camp for non-Jewish Polish DPs.

The town was first mentioned in the documents of the Lorsch Codex over 1240 years ago. In 956 Bensheim was granted market rights, and received the town charter in the 13th century. Trade and industry flourished as a result. In the year 1301, the town was burnt down and consequently governed by varying authorities.
