Jul 29, 2010 · The Benton Grammar School. July 29, 2010. This building is only a few blocks away from the Disney's House in Kansas City Missouri. What is now a retirement home was once the Benton Grammar School, and in 1910 Walt Disney was one of it's students. The Disney's left Kansas City in 1917 and the schools name was changed to the D.A. Holmes School.
The new Benton School, built of yellow brick at 30th and Benton Boulevard, was opened Sept. 12, 1904, with 12 rooms and a kindergarten. It replaced an old Benton school at 14th and Liberty which had been opened in 1869, and was named in honor of Thomas Hart Benton, who represented Missouri in the United States Senate from 1821 to 1851.
Description. Walt Disney contributed drawings for WPA murals at the former Benton Grammar School (the school he attended as a boy, later renamed D.A. Holmes Elementary). The murals were completed by WPA artists and delighted children for decades.
