- “I See Monsters” – Love Is Hell. Hidden deep in the 16 tracks of Love Is Hell, “I See Monsters” is another song largely forgotten by those not within Adams’s cult following.
- “Elizabeth, You Were Born to Play That Part” – 29. Off of one of Adams’ least-known albums, this largely instrumental gem stands out in the middle of a sea of rightly unknown.
- “English Girls Approximately” – Love Is Hell. Although much more upbeat than the rest of the down-in-the-dirt album, “English Girls Approximately” has a clever and kitschy twist on some typically despondent Adams lyrics: “Said you didn’t love me, it was right on time/I was just about to tell you but okay, alright.”
- “September” – Jacksonville City Nights. The track off the 2005 release is much less twang-infused than the rest of Jacksonville City Nights, one of the albums he recorded with as Ryan Adams and the Cardinals, although it’s just as hard-plucking as the rest.
- Heartbreaker. Considering the fact that Adams has released so many records, it’s hard to believe his first solo effort is still his best. But, it’s true.
- Cold Roses. This marked Adams’ first release after Love Is Hell and Rock N Roll, and found him easing back into the edges of alt-country with gusto. It feels almost like a lost album (well, double-album) from Adams’ former band Whiskeytown, and that’s a good thing.
- Love Is Hell. Split into EPs, then later reassembled as a proper album, Love Is Hell is one of the most ambitious projects Adams ever attempted. Trying to shed his alt-country label, he put together an album that is equal parts Radiohead and The Smiths.
- Gold. Fresh off his critically adored debut Heartbreaker, the pressure was on for Adams to deliver a follow-up that could take that adoration and break through to mainstream audiences.
