We consider traveling to a few of these small towns one of the best things to do in South Carolina ! Whether it’s enjoying the seagulls calling in a small coastal town or listening to a summer jazz festival, there’s a South Carolina town for everyone!
- Beaufort. Population: 12,960. Wild beauty and Lowcountry allure abound in this South Carolina gem. Get lost among the pines and palmettos of an ancient maritime forest at Hunting Island State Park, catch a striking sunset over the Beaufort River, and marvel at the columns and sweeping porches of stately mansions on Historic Craven Street.
- Georgetown. Population: 8,333. South Carolina’s Hammock Coast is made up of six towns between Myrtle Beach and Charleston. Georgetown, located smackdab in the middle of them, calls itself “the little town you’ve been looking for," and it’s hard to disagree.
- Bluffton. Population: 32,191. Consider Bluffton the poster child for the Carolina Lowcountry. With tranquil marshland, elegant homes, a colorful art scene, and palmettos everywhere you turn, this enclave on the May River has everything to love about South Carolina all in one place.

- Sullivan's Island. A short drive from downtown Charleston, Sullivan's Island is one of the best beach towns in South Carolina. The 2.5-mile-long island is known for historic Fort Moultrie (with ties to the American Revolution and Civil War), a charming main drag, and pristine beaches unsullied by high-rise hotels or tourist traps.
- Travelers Rest. The Upstate South Carolina region is dotted with lakes and rolling green hills in the shadow of the nearby Blue Ridge Mountains. Travelers Rest (or simply "TR") offers a dose of small-town living and outdoor adventure within 10 miles of the charming city of Greenville.
- Georgetown. South Carolina has plenty of lovely coastal small towns, including Georgetown, located between Charleston and Myrtle Beach. It's the third-oldest town in the state, so there's plenty of history to explore, plus local shops and restaurants on Front Street.
- Edisto Beach. The small town of Edisto Beach on Edisto Island is great for a laid-back coastal vacation. One of South Carolina's Sea Islands, Edisto is situated between Hilton Head and Charleston, and has beautiful beaches, including picturesque Driftwood Beach.

You can get to this little town in just a breezy 50-mile drive from the big city lights of Charleston, but it couldn’t be more different.

Beaufort still has a hint of a British vibe to it, and the antebellum architecture has been used in movie sets, including Forrest Gump and The Prince of Tides .
