In Big Jake (1971), the dog was named Dog in the film, but was actually played by a trained Collie named Laddie. Laddie was owned and prepared for the film by dog trainer Robert Weatherwax. So Sam in Hondo was Duke, John Wayne’s personal pet. Dog in Big Jake was Laddie, trained specifically for that role.
