2:22 was produced by Pandemonium's Bill Mechanic, Walk The Walk Entertainment's Steve Hutensky and Lightstream Pictures' Paul Currie. Garrett Kelleher of Lightstream, David Fountain and Kel West of Flywheel Entertainment and Jackie O’Sullivan served as executive producers.
Fox CEO Bill Mechanic championed the film, but he departed from the studio by the time the first draft was finished. It went back into turnaround.  Mechanic had also wanted to make some changes to the script, but Soderbergh disagreed  and decided to shop the film to other major studios.

The film stars Pierce Brosnan as King Louis XIV, Kaya Scodelario as Marie-Josèphe, and Benjamin Walker as Yves De La Croix. Principal photography began in early April 2014 in Versailles, France. Production then began on April 23 in Melbourne, Australia after a two weeks shoot in France. The shooting for the film wrapped-up in the end of May 2014.
