Early life. Little is known about Henry McCarty's background, but he is thought to have been born on Allen Street on the lower east side of Manhattan Island, New York on September 17, 1859 to Catherine (née Devine) McCarty. He was baptized on September 28, 1859 in the Church of St. Peter. [4] .
