    • Black Panther (King T'Challa) First Appearance: Fantastic Four #52 (July 1966) It goes without saying that the Black Panther is one of the most important Black characters in history.
    • Spider-Man (Miles Morales) First Appearance: Ultimate Fallout #4 (August 2011) The Ultimate universe famously killed Peter Parker and had a new hero, Miles Morales, assume his mantle.
    • Luke Cage. First Appearance: Luke Cage, Hero for Hire (June 1972) As the first Black superhero to get his own solo title, Luke Cage was an important trailblazer in representation.
    • Captain America (Sam Wilson) First Appearance: Captain America #117 (September 1969) In 2015, Steve Rogers retired. Rather than let the Captain America mantle remain vacant, Steve passed his shield and legacy to his longtime ally and friend, Sam Wilson (aka The Falcon).

  3. Jul 3, 2024 · A vast array of black superheroes exists across different comic universes, each distinguished by their distinct powers and narratives. From Marvels vibranium-rich realms to DC's far-reaching galaxies, these characters bring diversity and strengths that enrich their stories.

    • Blade. Despite not being part of Marvel’s Phase One, a strong argument can be made that Blade, the hybrid vampire-turned-vampire hunter, is not only the first Black hero, but the first superhero ever to be introduced in the Marvel Universe.
    • Nick Fury. Nick Fury has been a through-line of the MCU since his post-credits appearance in 2008’s Iron Man. This is fitting, given that the character, in one iteration or another, has been a presence in the comics since Timely/Atlas Comics became Marvel in the 1960s.
    • James “Rhodey” Rhodes – War Machine. If Blade was the first Black MCU hero, then James Rhodes was undoubtedly the second, although we did have to wait for the second installment of Iron Man to see him finally suit up as the iconic War Machine.
    • Sam Wilson – Falcon/Captain America. Although it’s widely known that Black Panther was the first Black Marvel superhero, the first Black American to hold that honor is Sam Wilson, aka The Falcon.
