Blackpool’s piers and other attractions were the key to its growth and success. 275,000 visited the North Pier in 1863, the year of its opening, and its popularity led to the construction of two more piers by the end of the nineteenth century, using innovative engineering techniques.
The pier is one of three in Blackpool, of course North and South being the others. Central pier is my favourite and the amusement arcades can fill a good hour with laughs. It has a lot of its traditional iron seats and character and although a little tired in parts, it is part of our heritage and so many of us have so many memories here.

North Pier is the most northerly of the three coastal piers in Blackpool, England.Built in the 1860s, it is also the oldest and longest of the three. Although originally intended only as a promenade, competition forced the pier to widen its attractions to include theatres and bars.

The pier is central in that it is located between the other two, but it was close to the site of the now-defunct Blackpool Central railway station about 550 yards south of Blackpool Tower. Since the coastline is very straight and flat, the pier simply extends at right angles to the sea front, roughly level with the promenade.
