In 1954, three years after disbanding his band, the Kings of Rhythm, Turner reassembled the band while living in West Memphis and had his wife at the time, Bonnie Mae Wilson, accompanying him on piano while he played guitar.

One of his fans, a teen-aged Anna Mae Bullock, joined his band as his lead vocalist in 1957. He renamed her Tina Turner, and they released their first record as the duo Ike & Tina Turner in 1960 with the "A Fool In Love" which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard R&B chart.

Playing on other musicians' recordings at the renamed Sun studios, he and the Kings of Rhythm also backed up a number of artists at live gigs in Memphis and later St. Louis. He even had a woman, Bonnie Mae Wilson, in the band for a few years, sometimes performing with her as Bonnie and Ike Turner.
