Boone is a town in and the county seat of Watauga County, North Carolina, United States. Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina, Boone is the home of Appalachian State University and the headquarters of the disaster and medical relief organization Samaritan's Purse.
In 1884, a noted travel writer visited Boone, even then, "a centre of interest," in the mountains. When he left, he wrote, "There is nothing special to be said about Boone. We were anxious to reach it, we were glad to leave it." What a difference a few years makes.
