Vince Vaughn is a revelation. A terrifically subtle performance in an otherwise over the top story. This is an homage to prison exploitation movies of the 70’s, hence the fake looking heads splattering. That’s the point. But it still manages to tell a solid, compelling story.
Brawl in Cell Block 99 (2017) This is not for family movie night, or for squeamish adults for that matter. Vince Vaughn does a surprisingly good job as the lead in an explicitly over the top and graphicly violent action film. If you are ok with grindhouse type violent action this might be up your alley. 11 7.
It also makes you feel bad for the characters who are getting their asses kicked. You mentioned Green Room, and the violence is kinda like that, too. The absolute worst prison in America is, by almost all accounts, Angola in Louisiana. The place is horrible. It routinely gets to 40C with 95+ humidity in the summer and only recently did they get air conditioning and it was put in due to the prisoners taking it to the supreme court, calling it cruel and unusual.
Once Vaughn gets to the prison, the movie is tons of over-the-top fun and the cheesy gore is really charming, but the first 40 minutes are unnecessary and boring. The whole sequence where the drug-running goes bad and turns into a shootout with the cops is done amazingly poorly—and not even in a fun grindhouse way.
Brawl in Cell Block 99. Surprised to see such a negative reaction on Reddit because I fucking loved this movie. Vince Vaughn was fantastic and the action was really well done and incredibly brutal. I get what people are saying about the practical effects being kinda bad (especially the final shot) but I think that was the intention the entire time.
