The pound sign (£) is the symbol for the pound unit of sterling – the currency of the United Kingdom and its associated Crown Dependencies and British Overseas Territories and previously of Great Britain and of the Kingdom of England. The same symbol is used for other currencies called pound, such as the Egyptian and Syrian pounds.

May 5, 2020 · The pound sterling sign features on a cheque dated 7 January 1661 in the Bank of England Museum – and the symbol was in common usage by the time the Bank of England was established in 1694 – but an ordinary letter ‘L’, in upper or lower case, was used to refer to pounds sterling in books and newspapers until the mid-19th century.
