Browns Island. With the James River running through downtown Richmond, Virginia, this island serves as a wonderful spot to observe a stretch of urban waterway. Browns Island is the finish area for the Richmond Marathon. Even though I ran the marathon in 2000, it was a lot of fun to volunteer at Browns Island, this year. The Sports Backers had numerous tents set up all over Browns Island, at the finish, for the runners. Read more.

During the Civil War, the Confederate States Laboratory produced ammunition and other military supplies on the island.
