- English bulldog. With a massive head, snub nose, wide shoulders and droopy jowls, the English bulldog is more recognizable than most breeds. Thanks to their tough looks, they became a symbol of the courage of England during World War II, though their courage has a longer history: In medieval times, they were bred for the long-since-outlawed English sport of bull-baiting.
- French bulldog. With their distinctive bat-like ears and compact size, there’s no denying Frenchies are one of the cutest types of bulldogs. Bred in France to be lap dogs, these pups make excellent companions for people who live in apartments or for older adults, Dr. Wysaski notes.
