In 2019 the fan window was restored. From 1975 the Peak Railway Preservation Society has been working to re-open the old Midland line across the Peak District to Matlock from adjacent reclaimed land. What it is used for now: Buxton Station still runs regular passenger trains to Manchester and the occasional steam train excursions call in.

Buxton station has a single entrance that leads into the ticket hall and onto platform 2, the main platform for arrivals and departures. As it's a terminus, both platforms are bays - to access platform 1, which is occasionally used in the early morning, simply walk around the buffers at the far end of the platform.
