The truth is: (1) Gore Vidal has been dead for the past eleven years. His vision for the film died with him. (2) The movie was directed by a softcore pornographer, so there probably isn't high art hidden anywhere in his footage. (3) The restoration isn't being handled by a filmmaker with a clear artistic vision.
Caligula is by no means a great movie, but it in many ways is a landmark in the transition from the buttoned-down movies since the Hayes Commission to the wide-open world of today. This is not a movie you throw in the DVD when friends and family are over. The quality of the scenes vary widely. Guccioni's additions stand out like a sore thumb.
