Mar 11, 2024 · Malcolm McDowell starred in 1979's Caligula. (Penthouse Films International/Everett Collection) For half a century the film has hung like a millstone around everybody involved’s necks. But after the surprise discovery of nearly 100 hours of previously unseen footage, Caligula has now been re-edited from the ground up.
Caligula is by no means a great movie, but it in many ways is a landmark in the transition from the buttoned-down movies since the Hayes Commission to the wide-open world of today. This is not a movie you throw in the DVD when friends and family are over. The quality of the scenes vary widely. Guccioni's additions stand out like a sore thumb.
