Eclipso’s first host in the modern era was Doctor Bruce Gordon. While Gordon is eventually able to rid himself of the entity, Eclipso lives on.
It had been split into thousands of pieces, and he could possess anybody holding one of these shards, merely pretending that he could only take control of Gordon. He also claims to have been masquerading as a B-list villain in order to avoid detection and stop Bruce Gordon's research into solar-science, as solar energy is his weakness.

In Countdown to Mystery #3, Crispus Allen, the Spectre's current host, tracks down Bruce Gordon. In issue #4, Eclipso once again takes Gordon as a host. Then, in issue #5, Bruce is shown to have some control over Eclipso's powers but can be overwhelmed by his persona if he uses too much of them at once.
