Do You Need a Degree to Go to Seminary? Typically, a bachelor’s degree is required in order to be accepted to seminary. However, due to special circumstances, an applicant without a bachelor’s degree may be considered by Calvin Theological Seminary, as is allowed by the Association of Theological Schools.

Multnomah’s MAAT (Master of Arts in Applied Theology) is a residential, cohort-based degree program. Students must have at least five years of demonstrated ministry experience. Multnomah follows the Fifteen Percent Rule, so if at first you don’t succeed–you know what to do.

Knox’s MDiv has as fully-online or residential offering, which sets it above its peers in flexibility and accessibility. MDiv applicants without an undergraduate degree will be assessed based on life experience and academic ability before admittance.
Lancaster’s residential MDiv seems to follow the Fifteen Percent Rule. They are fully-accredited and offer flexible course schedules, on weekdays or weekends. This Church of Christ seminary offers overnight hotel-style accommodations, or long-term one- and two-bedroom options of residential students.

- Faith and Belief in Tenets of Religion. The faith qualification is pretty subjective. Most schools require applicants to provide letters of recommendation just as secular colleges do.
- Academic Ability. Academic requisites may vary according to type of institution; some seminaries are schools in affiliated universities and must adhere to the admissions standards of the institution.
- Character. This, as faith and belief, may be subjective. The requisite is mentioned separately because of recent issues arising in the ministry in Protestant and in Catholic churches.
- Marriage Status. Students applying to a Catholic seminary who have been married may have to provide proof of their spouse’s death or of the annulment of their marriage.

On occasion, Western Seminary will admit college seniors, who are in good standing at their undergraduate institution, as non-degree students.
