Give each child a candy cane outline traced on red paper and place paper plates with red and white paint on the table. Show children how to fill in their candy cane outlines with alternating red and white fingerprints. While paint dries, introduce the poem. Read the poem out loud with children, pointing to each word on the chart paper.
The Legend of the Candy Cane is both a book and a poem that is popular with younger children during the holidays. The poem can be found in the book The Candymaker's Gift: The Legend of the Candy Cane by Helen Haidle. The book describes the symbolism and relationship between the candy cane and the story of Jesus' birth at Christmas.

It’s just a little Christmas treat, but also (did you know?) It represents our Savior born so long ago. The shape is like a “J” to symbolize His name. The white is for His life, holy, without blame.
