Jun 24, 2019 · Capelis XC-12. Founded by Socrates H. Capelis, the Capelis Safety Airplane Company was one of the most ironically named airplane manufacturers of the 1930s, considering that only one of its products, the XC-12 featured here, ever got off the ground…and it was not renowned for its safety.
The only XC-12 ever built. Built by the Capelis Safety Airplane Company, it was registered as NX12762 on 12 Jan 1933, and first flew in the same year. It failed to attract commercial interest, and following a minor accident on 15 Apr 1938 the aircraft was permanently grounded, its registration cancelled in Aug 1938.
The transport aircraft used in King of the Zombies was a Capelis XC-12, built in 1933 by Capelis Safety Airplane Corporation of California. The aircraft was a 12-seat, low-wing cabin monoplane with two 525 hp Wright Cyclone engines.

The Capelis XC-12 as a movie prop was used in numerous films including Daredevils of the Clouds. Under the working title, Daredevils of the Sky, principal photography began in mid-February 1948 at the Republic Pictures Corp. studio and backlots, Los Angeles, California. [2] [

On April 15, 1938, the XC-12 suffered minor damages from a forced landing after running out of fuel over Fresno, California. This single aircraft was bought by RKO in March 1939.
