Carteret County ( / ˌkɑːr.təˈrɛt / KAR-tuh-REHT or / ˌkɑːr.tɜːrˈɛt / KAR-tur-ET) [1] [2] is a county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 67,686. [3] . Its county seat is Beaufort. [4] . The county was created in 1722 as Carteret Precinct and gained county status in 1739. [5] .
Carteret County, located in the Coastal Plain region of eastern North Carolina, was formed in 1722 from Craven County and was named for Lord Proprietor John Carteret. It is a largely coastal county that incorporates the southern end of the Outer Banks, including Cape Lookout.
Beaufort (/ ˈ b oʊ f ər t / BOH-fərt, different than that of Beaufort, South Carolina) is a town in and the county seat of Carteret County, North Carolina, United States. Established in 1713 and incorporated in 1723, Beaufort is the fourth oldest town in North Carolina (after Bath, New Bern and Edenton).

CARTERET COUNTY. Carteret County is home to many of North Carolina's most popular and prosperous coastal communities and beaches, among them Morehead City (location of an official North Carolina state port), Emerald Isle, Indian Beach, Atlantic Beach, Cedar Point, Newport, and Harkers Island.
Carteret County, North Carolina was formed in 1722 out of Craven County. It is named in honor of Sir John Carteret, who was one of the Lords Proprietors of North Carolina. In 1744, Carteret became the Second Earl of Granville. Native inhabitants of the area were the Iroquois-speaking Tuscarora Indians.
