Philadelphia Austen Hancock (aunt) Cassandra Elizabeth Austen (9 January 1773 – 22 March 1845 [1]) was an amateur English watercolourist and the elder sister of Jane Austen. The letters between her and Jane form a substantial foundation to scholarly understanding of the life of the novelist.

Mar 24, 2018 · Cassandra Elizabeth Austen was born January 9, 1773, the fifth child and first daughter of her parents, named after her mother. She allegedly looked a lot like her elder brother Edward (later adopted by the Knight family).
Cassandra Austen. Cassandra was three years older than her sister Jane, and the two were best friends all their lives. Cassandra was pretty, practical and sensible, and although she is often pictured as the more solemn of the two sisters, Jane at least thought she was extremely funny. In a letter from 1796 she wrote:
Birth and Family Life. Jane Austen came into the world on December 16th, 1775. Born to Reverend George Austen of the Steventon rectory and Cassandra Austen of the Leigh family. She was to be their seventh child and only the second daughter to the couple.
