Catherine McCarty, the mother of Billy the Kid, was known as "a jolly Irish woman". In Wichita, Kansas (the first time she and her sons appear in historical record) she was the only woman to sign the petition that helped incorporate the town. She owned her own property and ran a laundry but soon moved her family to New Mexico.
In 1870 the two accompanied each other to Wichita, Kansas and settled in different homes. Antrim built a small cabin six miles outside of town and worked as a small farmer while Catherine lived in town. Catherine lived in the building where she ran her laundry service on North Main Street and dabbled in real estate.

May 17, 2022 · Three years later in 1869, the McCarty family again pulled up their stakes and with help from Mr. Antrim moved to Wichita, Kansas, where Catherine would open and operate a hand laundry service. Antrim, whose property adjoined the McCarty's, turned to farming, carpentry, and tending bar part-time in the local saloons.

In 1872 Catherine was diagnosed with “consumption” (now known as Tuberculosis) and the family left Wichita, looking for a better climate to improve atherine’s health.
