Ixodes holocyclus, commonly known as the Australian paralysis tick, is one of about 75 species in the Australian tick fauna and is considered the most medically important. Key Points. Tickborne fever is a rickettsial disease of domestic and free-living ruminants in the temperate regions of Europe. Disease is transmitted by the hard tick Ixodes ricinus. The main clinical signs are sudden fever in sheep and depression, weight loss and decreased milk yield in cattle. Diagnosis is by PCR.
Theileria parva is a species of parasites, named in honour of Arnold Theiler, that causes East Coast fever (theileriosis) in cattle, a costly disease in Africa. The main vector for T. parva is the tick Rhipicephalus appendiculatus. [1] Theiler found that East Coast fever was not the same as redwater, but caused by a different protozoan.
Application of early scientific discoveries through state and federal eradication programs eliminated cattle fever ticks, and thus Texas cattle fever, by the middle of the 20th century. This success provides today’s cattle industry $3 billion per year in savings from direct and indirect economic losses due to ticks and disease.
