The CIAA, founded on the campus of Hampton Institute (now Hampton University) in 1912, is the oldest African-American athletic conference in the United States. It was originally known as the Colored Intercollegiate Athletic Association and adopted its current name in December 1950.

Jun 14, 2012 · It changed its name to the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 1950. Two of its current schools – Livingstone and Biddle (now known as Johnson C. Smith) – are credited with playing, in 1892, the first intercollegiate football game between two African-American colleges.
