    Born and raised in Richmond, Virginia, Coleman and his four older siblings were placed in foster care before he was even a year old. They would remain there until Coleman was 14, at which point their grandmother took them in. Coleman developed his passion for acting early and began acting while in school. As an adult, Coleman joined the U.S. Army in 1995 and served as a video cameraman stationed at the Pentagon in D.C. until his discharge in 1999. Coleman's first acting credit was before he even joined the Army in 1992. He has since starred in several Broadway shows and has become a prolific actor. He married actress Sally Stewart on June 7, 1999 and has two children. He also works with children growing up in similar circumstances to himself and is a spokesman for Date with Dad.

    Chad L. Coleman grew up in Richmond, Virginia. He grew up on the show Lost in Space, which had a "profound effect," sparking a love for science fiction that matured with Star Trek. After being in foster care for his teenage years, he enlisted in the US Army. After the Army, he moved to New Yorkand performed in many plays including Broadway performances. His most prominent roles are that of Dennis "Cutty" Wise on The Wire and Tyreese Williams on The Walking Dead. Coleman and Larry Joe Campbellpublicly joined the cast of The Orville together on April 3, 2017. He says that performing the role of a Moclan calls upon his Shakespearean training to speak soberly and with a carefully articulated cadence.
