Charles II, (born May 29, 1630, London, Eng.—died Feb. 6, 1685, London), King of Great Britain and Ireland (1660–85). Son of Charles I and Henrietta Maria, he supported his father in the English Civil Wars. After his father’s execution, he invaded England in 1651 but was defeated at Worcester.
The son of the deposed and executed King Charles I, young Charles II was born in May 1630 and was only twelve when the Civil War broke out. Such was the socially volatile climate in which he grew up, that at the age of fourteen he was put in charge as commander-in-chief in western England.
