His father, Strait Fairey, is a doctor, and his mother, Charlotte, a realtor. He attended Porter-Gaud School in Charleston and transferred to high school at Idyllwild Arts Academy in Idyllwild, California , from which he graduated in 1988.

As gracious and welcoming as Fairey and his staff were, I was sure Dr. Strait and Charlotte Fairey were looking forward to spending some time with their son. As Anthony, Kim and I were leaving, we thanked everyone for their hospitality.
Born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina, Shepard Fairey was son to doctor Strait Fairey and realtor Charlotte Fairey. Shepard graduated from Idyllwild Arts Academy in 1988 and the Rhode Island School of Design in 1992 receiving a bachelors in of Fine Arts in illustration.
