The house is famous for its use as a Federal Headquarters by Major Generals C.F. Smith, U.S. Grant, Don Carlos Buell and W.H.L. Wallace, during the Battle of Shiloh, a few miles to the southwest. The modified, white Georgian building faces west to the river with a handsome two-level porch.
