After hearing Chubby Checker's version of "The Twist", Layton became fascinated with playing the drums. He moved back to Corpus Christi and acquired his first drum set at the age of 13. Layton graduated from W. B. Ray High School, where he was part of the school band.
Chris Layton. Originally from Corpus Christi, TX, Chris Layton moved to Austin in 1975, and three years later joined the newly-formed Double Trouble. Tommy Shannon joined in 1980, and the two of them played with Stevie Ray Vaughan right up until his tragic death in 1990. The pair then joined Charlie Sexton and Doyle Bramhall II in the Arc Angels.

But while their personal chemistry was abundant their musical chemistry still had a ways to go.

Texas native Chris Layton really started his drumming career on the right foot when began drumming in the late Stevie Ray Vaughan's band, Double Trouble, in 1978. They would collaborate all the way up until Vaughan's untimely death in 1990.
