On Thursday, he spoke in front of the Boston College Class of 2023 at this year’s First-Year Convocation. His story—one he put pen to paper in his memoir The Master Plan—is truly an anomaly.
Behind bars, Wilson embarked on a remarkable journey of self-improvement--reading, working out, learning languages, even starting a business. At nineteen, he sat down and wrote a list of all the things he intended to accomplish, and all the steps he'd have to take to get there. He called it his Master Plan.
Bullied by his older brother Derrick, Wilson believes he is too soft, so he collects as many guns as he can. “Some guys were working. There was a kid in the next dayroom over, for instance, always reading. I figured he was a short-timer, in for jaywalking or something, because he was neat, and his clothes looked rich.
Chris Wilson splits his time between Baltimore, Maryland, and New York City and works as a visual artist, author, film producer, and social justice advocate. Through his work, he investigates societal injustices, human relationships, and public policies. His book, the Master Plan, continues to inspire people from all walks of life.
Well, Chris Wilson took that message to heart and became the best prisoner that anyone could ever be. In prison, he managed to let go of the anger, took responsibility for his actions, didn't make excuses, found a mentor, created a master plan, and stuck to it.
