Cloris Leachman was born on April 30, 1926 in Des Moines, Iowa to Berkeley Claiborne "Buck" Leachman and the former Cloris Wallace. Her father's family owned a lumber company, Leachman Lumber Co.
After briefly attending Northwestern University, Leachman participated in the 1946 Miss America Pageant as Miss Chicago. She was named one of the 16 semifinalists, an award that led to her film debut as an extra in Carnegie Hall the following year. During the next two decades, Leachman took on roles in a number of TV shows and Broadway plays.
