The best-known haptophytes are coccolithophores, which make up 673 of the 762 described haptophyte species, and have an exoskeleton of calcareous plates called coccoliths. Coccolithophores are some of the most abundant marine phytoplankton , especially in the open ocean, and are extremely abundant as microfossils, forming chalk deposits.

Overview. Coccolithophores (or coccolithophorids, from the adjective [12]) form a group of about 200 phytoplankton species. [13] . They belong either to the kingdom Protista, according to Robert Whittaker 's Five kingdom classification, or clade Hacrobia, according to the newer biological classification system.
Jan 1, 2022 · Coccolith size variation within a single coccosphere challenges the cell-to-coccolith size relationship. Influence of cell growth on coccolith size is discussed based on new observations and modelling.

Dec 1, 2021 · Here, using high-resolution coccolith data, we show that during the last 2.8 million years the morphological evolution of coccolithophores was forced by Earth’s orbital eccentricity with rhythms ...
Nov 15, 2022 · Disruption of the cytoskeleton could potentially influence the calcification processes in multiple ways, from the intracellular transport of substrates to the coccolith vesicle, to the direct shaping of the coccolith vesicle and the exocytosis of the mature coccolith (Durak et al. 2017).
