The submarine base at Coco Solo was established May 6, 1918. [1] The site corresponds with modern-day Cativá in Panama. It was on the Atlantic Ocean (northwest) side of the Panama Canal Zone, near Colón, Panama. Five C-class submarines were based there during 1914–1919.

The subs based at Coco Solo were R-class boats—186 feet long, displacing less than 700 tons submerged, and armed with one 3-inch gun and four 21-inch torpedoes in bow tubes. Plans to boost the naval defenses of the Canal Zone were soon curtailed by the Washington Naval Treaty, signed on 6 February 1922.

When he was born (1936) at Coco Solo Naval Air Station on the Atlantic side of the Panama Canal Zone, Myself, (a 3 year old brat) and my family, were living just a few miles away across the Mananillo Bay in Cristobal.

Apr 8, 2015 · Hello. I found this site while researching Coco Solo Hospital. I was born in that hospital on June 23, 1964 to Panamanian parents. My Father had a job on the Canal Zone, which allowed my mom to use the hospital for my birth. Sadly, I don’t think the hospital exist any more. I’m not sure if the building is still there.
