You may know your way around some of the more commonly used courtroom terms, such as testimony, objection, cross-examination, plea bargain and circumstantial evidence. But have you ever found yourself baffled by some of the legalese you hear in the episodes of your favorite court-based shows?

Those mysterious words will play a big part in your career as a paralegal, so it’s important to get familiar with basic legal terms (often called “terms of art”) and common legal phrases (often referred to as “specialized terminology”).

The language used in law is changing. Many lawyers are now adopting a plain English style. But there are still legal phrases that baffle non-lawyers. This guide is intended to help in two ways: • it should help non-lawyers understand legal phrases; and • it should give lawyers ideas for explaining the legal phrases that they use.
