The technical format of an audio compact disc (Compact Disc Digital Audio—CDDA) is laid down in a document produced in 1980, by the format's joint creators, Sony and Philips. The document is known colloquially as the "Red Book," after the color of its cover. The format is a two-channel, 16-bit PCM encoding at a 44.1 kHz sampling rate.
A shaped compact disc is a non-circular compact disc. Examples include business card CDs , CDs in the shape of a star, a map of a country, interview material and more. These discs are usually made for marketing purposes and are properly read by most CD-ROM drives (and audio CD players, although custom-shaped CDs tend to contain less data).
