The William Tell Overture is the overture to the opera William Tell (original French title Guillaume Tell ), whose music was composed by Gioachino Rossini. William Tell premiered in 1829 and was the last of Rossini's 39 operas, after which he went into semi-retirement (he continued to compose cantatas, sacred music and secular vocal music).

The legend tells the story of a Swiss man named William Tell who was forced to shoot an apple off his son’s head with a crossbow as a demonstration of his loyalty to the ruling Austrian authorities.
Later the overture from it struck bulls eye and became Rossini's best known work. William Tell was a folk hero of disputed historical authenticity who is said to have lived in the canton of Uri in Switzerland in the early 14th century.
