Contra dance is live music with a band and caller (circle Left, circle Right, etc). No fancy steps or moves. It amounts to walking in time to the music. It is much easier than line dancing, and not so fancy as square dancing. We wear regular comfortable clothing, with smooth-soled shoes to help you move comfortably on the wood floor.

Contra dance is a form of folk dancing made up of long lines of couples. It has mixed origins from English country dance, Scottish country dance, and French dance styles in the 17th century. Sometimes described as New England folk dance or Appalachian folk dance, contra dances can be found around the world, but are most common in the United States, Canada, and other Anglophone countries.

There's a contra dance in Ann Arbor almost every Saturday night, most of which are AACTMAD events. Some are put on by other organizations. All are fun. Most dances begin at 7:30. Beginners are welcome: Often there is an introductory session 30 minutes before the dance, so first-timers come early. Come alone or bring a friend.
