Coptic Christians trace their founding to the apostle St. Mark. Tradition holds that Mark brought Christianity to Egypt and founded the Coptic church during the first century. It is one of the oldest Christian churches in the Middle East and was the first founded in Africa.
The Coptic Christians are a distinct religious community in Egypt and the Coptic Orthodox Church is the largest Christian institution in the Middle East. The origin of the community dates to the childhood of Jesus, who was said to have traveled to Egypt with his father, Joseph, and mother, Mary.
Consequently, the Coptic Christians once again thrive in Egypt. Although the Coptic Christians originated from Egypt, they have spread widely to other neighboring countries and Africa at large. Sudan has a minority number of Coptic Christians adding up to about 500,000. The population is approximately 1% of the Sudanese population.
