Counties of Maine. This is a list of the 16 counties in the U.S. state of Maine. Before statehood, Maine was officially part of the state of Massachusetts and was called the District of Maine. Maine was granted statehood on March 15, 1820, as part of the Missouri Compromise.

Maine on a map of the USA. There are 16 counties in Maine, each with its own unique history and culture. In this post, we’ll take a look at each of these counties, starting with a Maine Counties Map that highlights the major city in each.
Maine has sixteen counties, as well as hundreds of local governments. The earliest established was York, in 1652; the latest, Knox in 1860. The structure and functions of county government are similar throughout the state. For a brief sketch of each county, click on its name in the map at right.
