Susan B. Anthony, (born Feb. 15, 1820, Adams, Mass., U.S.—died March 13, 1906, Rochester, N.Y.), U.S. pioneer in the women’s suffrage movement. A precocious child, she learned to read and write at the age of three. After attending a boarding school in Philadelphia, she took a teaching position in a Quaker seminary in upstate New York.
In 1979, she became the first woman whose portrait appeared on a circulating coin in the United States. A recent study by the National Women’s History Museum reveals that many states require students to learn about her.
