Daniel Parke Custis’s untimely death on July 8, 1757 forced Martha into action. She ordered a black walnut coffin for her husband’s burial. Because Virginians did not practice embalming, burial occurred within a day or two after death.
The artist also painted the other members of the Custis family: Custiss wife, Martha Dandridge Custis, and the Custiss two surviving children, John Parke (Jacky) and Martha Parke (Patsy) Custis. Daniel Parke Custis died later in 1757, probably from a throat infection.
