Apr 30, 2018 · In 1948 he formed a relationship with playwright Bill Mercer, who became his longtime companion. In 1953 Manners retired completely from acting. He sold his ranch 3 years later, moved back to the L.A. area (Pacific Palisades) and began his spiritual path.
David lived with long-time friend and fellow writer Bill Mercer and remained in Pacific Palisades until early 1978 when he felt the need for a change. Initially considering Northern California, he was eventually persuaded to stay in the south because of its milder winters.

He became the domestic partner of the actor David Manners in 1948 and they remained together for the rest of Bill's life.

Manners and Mercer remained partners until Bill's death in 1978. Following his retirement from acting, Manners spent the remaining decades of his life pursuing his personal interests, including painting, writing, and studying philosophy. Several of his novels, published by Dutton, sold over 100,000 copies each.
In 1948, he established a long-term personal relationship with playwright Frederic William ("Bill") Mercer (1918-1978). The couple remained together in California until Bill's death. After his Hollywood years, David re-intensified his strong spiritual interest and took a path that resulted in a number of philosophical writings.
