Born Dean Jeffries Jagger or Dean Ida Jagger in Columbus Grove or Lima, Ohio,he grew up on a farm. He wanted to act and would practice oratory on cows while working on the farm. He later won several oratory competitions. At age 14 he worked as an orderly at a sanatorium. He dropped out of school several times before finally attending Wabash College. While at Wabash, he was a member of Lambda Chi Alphafraternity and played football. He dropped out in his second year, realizing he was not suited to an academic life. At age 17, he taught all eight grades in an elementary school in the country, before heading to Chicago. He studied at the Conservatory of Drama with Elias Day and through him got a job on the Chautauqua Circuit.
Early stage appearances
Jagger studied acting at Chicago's Lyceum Arts Conservatory. He eventually played Young Matt in a production of Shepherd of the Hillson the stage in Chicago. This experience resulted in him deciding to try his luck in New York. He joined a stock company as Spencer Tracy's replacement. He performed in vaudeville, on the radio and on stage, making his Broadway debut in 1925 in a bit part in a George M. Cohanproduction. He was in a play Remote Controlin 1928.
Jagger visited Los Angeles on a vaudeville show with Irene Rich. While in town he made his film debut in The Woman from Hell (1929) with Mary Astor. "My good notices," he later recalled, "had a reverse effect on the industry, which was suddenly revolutionized by sound pictures. With the one film to my credit, I was considered part of that group of untouchables-silent film stars." He followed it with Handcuffed (1929). Jagger decided to move into film production, hel...
Jagger's big career break came when cast in a lead role in Tobacco Roadin 1933. This was a huge hit, and ran until 1941. Jagger left the show in 1934 to appear in They Shall Not Diewhich only ran 62 performances.
When Jagger tried to marry his second wife, Gloria Ling, in 1947, they were denied a marriage license in California due to a state law "forbidding unions between Caucasians and Mongolians [sic]"; Ling's father had been born in China. Within two days the couple had flown to Albuquerque, and were married under "New Mexico's more liberal statute". In later life, Dean Jagger suffered from heart disease; he died in his sleep in Santa Monica, California. He was 87, and was buried in the small town of Hughson, California, at Lakewood Memorial Park. He was survived by his third wife, Etta, a daughter and two stepsons. All sources I have seen, including "The Film Encyclopedia," state that Dean Jagger was born in Lima, Ohio, but reared (or "raised," if you prefer to equate men with livestock)in Columbus Grove, Ohio and other localities later on. I myself am from near Lima, Ohio, and always heard that Dean was born there and I believe the signs entering the town now say "Birthplace of Dean Jagger." By the way, Lima is a surprisingly sophisticated place with its own Public Radio station and other amenities ususally reserved for larger cities; it is pronounced LIGH-mah, not LEE-mah as in Spanish, e.g. the capital of Peru. Since I am only 99% sure of this, I have not taken the liberty to edit the article, but I think the author or someone else who is 100% certain should look into it.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Billcito (talk • contribs) 18:23, 1 September 2006 He was born in Lima, OH BUT was RAISED in Columbia City, IN. I've read differing accounts of Dean Jagger's education. There seems to be little disagreement about his having been a high school dropout, however,--and this is no small matter--some sources I've read have listed him as having attended and graduated from Wabash College (in Indiana), while others claim he "attended" Wabash but never took a degree. The Wiki article favors the latter. Since Mr. Jagger often played men of distinction and education it would be good to know if he graduated from college (it seems clear that he held no graduate degrees). It would in some ways be more remarkable, and a further indication of his talent as an actor, if he was a college as well as a high school dropout. Either way, he was a skilled and gifted actor. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Telegonus (talk • contribs) 07:56, 18 August 2017 (UTC)
