Abstract. Given that most fatal hangings are suicidal and occur in locations that have been selected to conceal this activity (thus maximizing the chances of a lethal outcome), there has been very little corroboration of the speed with which unconsciousness and death may occur.

Hanging is the most frequently used method of suicide in the UK and has high case fatality (>70%). To explore factors influencing the decision to use hanging. Semi-structured qualitative interviews with 12 men and 10 women who had survived a near-fatal suicide attempt. Eight respondents had attempted hanging.
Suicide death rates due to hanging and asphyxiation increased annually on average by 2.4% (AAPC, 2.4; 95% CI, 0.2-4.6) (eTable 4 in Supplement 1) and were highest among American Indian and Alaska Native adolescents (12.6 per 100 000 population) (eTable 2 in Supplement 1).
Given the brief duration of some suicidal crises, a lethal dose of pills in the nightstand poses a greater danger than a prescription that must be hoarded over months to accumulate a lethal dose. Similarly, a gun in the closet poses a greater risk than a very high bridge five miles away, even if both methods have equal lethality if used.
