Below is a working list of every character in Death Stranding based on the trailers and promotional material for the game. Many of these characters have been motion captured by notable actors so you may recognize some of these faces. This page includes everything we know about the characters from their role, looks, notable quotes, and speculation on what it all means.

•Sam Porter Bridges (played by Norman Reedus)

    •Cliff (played by Mads Mikkelsen)

Sam Porter Bridges is the main character of Death Stranding. In the 2018 trailer, he claims to have “the extinction factor” and refers to himself as a delivery man.

He’s often seen carrying a “Bridge Baby” which exists inside a pod. These Bridge Babies allow people to “plug into the other side” and temporarily see BTs. BTs are ghost-like enemies that can drag people through the ground to new locations or perhaps a different time entirely. BTs seem to want their host alive, as they abandon the unnamed man Sam is with after he shoots him.

Sam can’t spot BTs but he can sense them.

At various points across all the trailers we see Sam lightly covered in handprints. These handprints appear when the invisible creatures (BTs) are roaming about. The handprints we see on Sam seem to be some sort of physical reaction to the BTs.

Sam can engage in both shooting, with an assault rifle, and close-range melee combat, even using the Bridges Cargo Case itself as a weapon. Items like his ladder and climbing anchor help him traverse the area: from scaling mountains to crossing chasms. He also seems to have a close-range weapon at his disposal, it looks like a knife based on the item wheel we saw in the release date reveal trailer.

In terms of clothing, Sam is often seen in various suits to protect him from the environment. He always has on an electronic handcuff dangling from his wrist which suggests he may be stuck in some form of servitude or bound to something for his own protection. Other characters with this handcuff include, but are not limited to, Deadman, Mama, and Heartman.

In the Death Stranding Trailer from The Game Awards 2016, we saw Cliff commanding a small group of skeletal soldiers dressed like World War 2 paratroopers while Cliff was wearing modern-day military garb. These “men” were connected to Cliff by black cords just like the black “umbilical cord” connecting the Bridge Baby to Sam Bridge when he woke up on the beach in the reveal trailer from E3 2016.

These tentacle-like cords seem to command the soldiers and then retract completely. The black liquid drips running down Cliff’s face in this scene are similar to the dripping we see on the game title. Kojima confirmed that those strands hanging from the game’s title are actually umbilical cords.

Fragile consumes Cryptobites (a small, crawling insect; similar to a grub) to keep “timefall away”.” This is referring to the harmful rain that plagues the world of Death Stranding. Exposure to Timefall causes time to fast forward. This seems to damage the body or send it off to another timeline, dimension, or region.

She's often sporting a jacket covered in retractable spikes. These spikes seem to signal that the BTs creatures are near. The back of her jacket reads “Fragile Express, Handled With Love.”

Based on her jacket, it's possible that Fragile is also a delivery person and that both her and Sam are named after the organizations they’re associated with. (i.e Fragile and Bridges).

At the same time, she asks Sam to come work for her. He rejects the offer saying "he's just a delivery person." This suggests whatever Fragile is involved in is bigger than what Sam is doing and that he has no interest in getting involved.

We haven’t gotten any concrete information on Mama yet. We see her in a jumpsuit, waving off some sort of particle as if conducting an experiment. She’s sporting the same electronic handcuff that Sam and Deadman have worn. On her back, she has a detection robot glowing brightly but she’s not carrying a Bridge Baby.

It's possible that she's some kind of scientist, likewise Heartman seems to be a scientist as well. But this is just speculation.

We first see Deadman in the trailer shown at The Game Awards 2016. There, he’s sporting the same electronic handcuff as Sam Bridges, Mama, and Heartman. On his jacket, there’s a Bridges pin which suggests he may be a member of the organization.

We've seen Deadman connect to a Bridge Baby as well.

Heartman wears the same electronic handcuff as Sam, Deadman, and Mama. We see him in front of a few screens . Later, we watch him clutch at the ground while being dragged away from a crowd of people (perhaps by the BTses).

Both him and Mama seem to be scientists but this is just speculation.

This character makes his first appearance in the Death Stranding release date reveal trailer. He is wearing a black face mask with only his eyes exposed.

The mask seems to be made out of a hard, protective material and includes a cast for his two rows of teeth (which move when he speaks). The mask has gold bolts on his cheeks. The top of the mask has a serial number and some letters underneath.

This character makes his first appearance in the Death Stranding release date reveal trailer. He’s holding an assault rifle and his hood includes 3 rows of text. The first is a phrase, the second says Lv-1, and the third is some sort of serial number.

He has two black liquid drips coming from his right eye. This liquid is the same kind we saw on running profusely down Cliff’s face in The Game Awards 2016 trailer. This effect seem to be related to connection/control. When Cliff was controlling the skeleton soldiers his face was drenched in it but after they did his bidding his face was clean.

When Amelie first sees Sam Bridges she says “You’re too late. You still don’t know who I am, do you?” This suggests that her and Sam have some sort connection, perhaps in differing timelines. That, or she’s someone of power/status.

She is seen crying two streams of blood in the release date reveal trailer. Until this point, characters have only cried tears or a black liquid.

Amelie wants to rebuild America and has already started down that path. Sam is told to “finish what Amelie started…” Ultimately, Amelie thinks people need to reconnect in order to survive.

She says “Humans weren’t made for living alone” which suggests that there’s a level of isolation among people. This isolation is most likely in terms of physical contact because we see several characters speak to one another. Of course, it’s still unclear which (if any) of the characters are “human.”
