Impairment-related work expenses, or IRWE, are what Social Security calls unreimbursed costs that people with disabilities incur to make it possible for them to work. For example, if you need paratransit service to get to the office or a guide dog to get around it, that's an IRWE.
In most cases, we can deduct the out-of-pocket costs of these items, which we call impairment related work expenses (IRWE), from the amount of earnings we use to figure your SSI benefit. This means that we do not reduce your SSI benefit as much because we do not count all of your earnings. WHAT ARE SOME EXAMPLES OF IRWE THAT CAN BE DEDUCTED?
Impairment-Related Work Expenses If you are disabled, you can take a business deduction for expenses that are necessary for you to be able to work. If you take a business deduction for these impairment-related work expenses, they are not subject to the 7.5% limit that applies to medical expenses.
