    For leaders who are in a new organization, or have a new team, New Leader Assimilation (NLA) is a highly effective tool. Originally developed by General Electric, NLA’s are widely used by many organizations – typically done in the first three months of a new leaders’ appointment – but many medium size companies have never heard of them.     Typically, a facilitator will ask a leader’s direct reports five key questions (usually via an online survey) – questions which each have a rationale behind them. These questions (and rationales) could be:

    Send an online survey to participants
    Facilitator reviews responses with the leader
    Send responses to participants to review prior to the session
    Group meets (via video-conference or face-to-face).
    Leader does a five-minute kickoff, then leaves the room.
    Facilitator meets with the team for an hour to discuss the results of the online survey and adds more information.
    During the second hour, team members return to work while the facilitator and leader prioritize what to discuss.
    The team then reconvenes for an hour, for a dialogue.

    Four to six months after the NLA, the team can do a team alignment session. The primary focus of this is to measure how well the team is aligned around three main areas: tasks, relationships, and processes.     • Elevate emotional intelligence and empathy. One of the cornerstones of my NLA program is the cultivation of emotional intelligence (EQ) and empathy. These are foundational attributes that enable leaders to build a positive and inclusive culture where team members feel motivated to contribute their best.
    • Nurture cultural sensitivity. Within the fabric of every organization lies a unique culture, and in my coaching for executive transitions, I place significant emphasis on nurturing cultural sensitivity.
    • Foster trust through transparency. Trust is the foundation of effective leadership, and it emerges from transparency and honesty. During a recent new-leader assimilation, I worked with a senior executive who was appointed as the head of a division facing significant challenges.
    • Deploy behavioral nudging for change adoption. Change is often met with resistance. In my NLA program, I leverage principles from behavioral economics to facilitate smoother change adoption.
    • Get to know the team. Building relationships as a new boss can be challenging, but the first step is getting to know team members on a personal level.
    • Learn the team’s history. The team that exists today may have been built for a different purpose or with different original team members. There may be tenured team members combined with new team members, or any other combination of differences, so knowing team history is good for more than just the leader.
    • Establish mutual expectations. This is one of the most crucial steps to effective teamwork, allowing the team to avoid potential problems or conflicts due to lack of clarity.
    • Create agreements for working together. The team’s commitment to accountability allows each member to feel a sense of contribution toward the overall teams’ goals.
